What is the best baby swing and why you need one
The results are in: Millions of parents are relishing from the benefits of providing their child with a baby swing chair. These incredibly innovative childcare tools allow your child a safe place to rest comfortably, build confidence and even enjoy many features offered like: music, animal sounds and colorful hanging toys. A baby swing gives you a great advantage when it comes to soothing a fussy baby. A motorized swing imitates the motion your child would have felt while in your womb. This is usually such an effective way to calm an infant down that it may feel like cheating!
They are built incredibly safe and durable, featuring a safety harness to keep your baby strapped in while they sway in comfort. It also gives you a great opportunity to get some housework done or take the much-deserved break that rarely comes when caring for an infant. Studies show that introducing a swing for newborn baby can be a great way to give them their first taste of independence. By not being totally dependent on their mother or father to provide comfort, they can gain a boost in confidence at a very early age. Physical advancements are another huge benefit your baby will receive. Top rated baby swings are designed to provide healthy support for their fragile spines, promoting proper growth.
Eye control will also quickly progress as a baby learns to focus on items while the swing is swaying. Ultimately, a swing for baby will give you and your child huge advantages if used properly. Some children may become too dependent on the comfort of a swing and prefer that over sleeping in their regular sleeping place. A good idea some parents use is to only allow the child in the swing during daylight. They will quickly understand that their crib is for sleeping and the swing is for relaxing and short naps.
Things to Consider
When looking to make a purchase for a new swing for your home, there are important factors to consider. A swing should first and foremost be safe (more on that below.) Once safety has been established, it’s time to consider which swing will best suit your lifestyle and give you the most bang for your buck. Ask yourself if you plan to mainly keep your baby swing in one spot, whether you will be moving it from room to room, or if you will use it as an outdoor baby swing. Some models are heavy, bulky and not really meant to be moved around much. If your intentions are to constantly be on the move, you should focus on a portable, lightweight option.
It is crucial to understand the weight limits for the swing you are considering. Placing a child beyond the recommended weight in the swing may cause the swing to collapse and create injury. A toddler swing will be your best bet if you plan to allow your child in a swing as they grow older. Most of the swings in our review section will support your child from infant weight all the way to 30 lbs. The recommended maximum weight is there to show how much weight a swing can support, not that your child should remain in the seat until the max is reached. You’ll know it’s time to take away swinging privileges once your child begins making attempts to get out. It can be extremely dangerous if your child does actually get loose while the swing is in motion.
Safety and Security
In 2008, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act was set into motion regarding infant swings. This act did big things for the safety standards that manufacturers must meet before putting their products on the market. Some of these improvements included limiting the amount of lead paint used to safe levels, thorough testing and achieving certification by meeting standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. With all of that being said, you can confidently introduce a swing for newborn baby into your home.
While the standards these improved swings offer, there are still a few things to consider when using them. Remember these life-saving tips set out by the American Academy of Pediatrics when using a baby swing in your home. Until your infant is at least four months old, be sure they are positioned in the most reclined position the seat offers. This can assist a child who cannot fully hold their head up yet. Any available toys attached to the swing should be securely attached. Give them a tug yourself and make sure they cannot be easily removed.
ALWAYS follow recommended weight limits of the model you are using. Never leave a child unattended in a baby swing. Even if they are napping, it is important to be in the same room as them to ensure they are safe. The AAP advises against buying used swings. You may not be able to confirm that the seat was created before or after the Improvement Act was implemented. Experts state that once your child is able to push up on their hands and knees, that you should stop use of the swing. Following these safety guidelines will give you a great peace of mind that you are buying a safe, quality product for your child to grow in.
Bouncers vs Jumpers vs Swings
These three useful childcare products serve individual purposes for your child’s comfort and entertainment. But with so many different options of each, we want to mainly focus on informing you of their differences rather than going into too much detail of the advantages over one another.
1. Baby Swings – This is a great place for an infant to rest due to its comfortability, familiar swaying movements and critical safety standards. They typically carry weight limits of 25-30 pounds so your child can get plenty of use out of these before they outgrow it.
2. Baby Jumpers – A jumper screams anything but relaxation! Babies love testing out their developing legs by jumping. These offer a great way for children who can hold their heads up themselves to gain a great amount of exercise.
3. Baby Bouncers – Rather than swaying side-to-side like most swings, a bouncer offers back-and-forth movement. They are suitable for baby from day one but will require you to provide the movement until they figure out that their movement will make the bouncer work! Some bouncers offer a vibration function to provide even more relaxation for your child.
You and your child will both find great benefits in each of these products.
Different Types of Baby Swings
If you’re on the hunt for the best baby swing, you have likely noticed different types of swings like: a cradle, a glider and the impressive combo. Do you know exactly what the differences are? If not, allow us to educate you before you commit to buying a swing that may not be in your best interest.
A cradle swing typically features a sturdy frame, seat and motor to power the swing. These large swings are not always easy to carry around or pack up on trips away from home. Their large frames do add stability and make it tough for the swing to topple over. Typically, a cradle swing only swings side-to-side and sometimes head to toe. You can expect to pay a pretty penny on some models, but these usually carry the most features as well as support children longer.
A baby glider is considered the new kid on the block in the world of baby motion products. Gliders carry the same safety features as a cradle swing but have a different ability of movement. They will usually imitate the motion of a nursery glider chair. Children love this motion if you already use a glider to soothe their fussy moments.
There are also some great combo units out there today. Swing/Bouncer combos are beginning to become common and are great for the home and on the go. They add the convenience of a stationary swing but you can easily remove the seat and transform it into a lightweight, portable bouncer.

As far as entertainment value goes, this newborn swing really goes the extra mile! An overhead mobile features soft and friendly lamb toys to keep your baby’s eyes fixed. The underside of the mobile serves as a mirror, giving your child the opportunity to develop of a good sense of themselves. There are also sixteen songs to soothe your baby to sleep or inspire them to be active. This swing weighs in at 18 lbs. making portability possible. Being so lightweight makes this portable baby swing a must for parents who will be transporting this model from room to room.
It also features an easy-folding system, making it easy to pack for trips away or for storage when not in use. Many parents rave about how the swing’s conventional design works well with any room’s decoration scheme. Most parents find their child appear very comfortable and take to the swing well once they become familiar with it.
The only real downsides we noticed were about the swing’s overall size and its dependability on expensive D batteries. Some parents didn’t like how far the legs spread apart when fully extended. It takes up a lot of space in smaller rooms. As for the batteries, we recommend investing in a couple good sets of rechargeable batteries. Keep a spare set fully charged so you will be ready when it needs a replacement. This will save you a ton of money and save a good amount of space in landfills that are being overloaded with expired batteries. We feel that the good definitely outweighs any negative aspects of this swing!
4moms mamaRoo Baby Swing
If you are looking for a basic traditional swing that offers just a handful of useful features, this may not be the best infant swing for you. However, if you’re looking for cutting-edge technology, more features than you will know what to do with and an incredibly sleek design, the mamaRoo will add incredible benefits to your family! 4moms has taken everything we love and rely on in baby swings and hit our expectations out of the park. They have created a swing that replicates the movements parents make when we are attempting to relax our precious children. This seat doesn’t sway like most swings on the market, rather it gives your baby the sense that they are in their mom’s or dad’s arms.
You can choose from six different motion settings including: Car Ride Kangaroo Tree Swing Rock-a-Bye Wave. Having access to these options and a control for speed, make it simple to find the setting that your child loves the most. Changing these settings can be achieved by the attractive LCD panel displayed on the front of the unit or your phone or tablet! We now have the luxury of altering the motions (and ultimately, the comfortability of our children) right from the couch. This is huge when you are attempting to get in some quality resting time for yourself.
Infants love being distracted by noises or music and this model won’t restrict you from supplying your child with their favorite tunes. The mamaRoo is preloaded with soothing sounds like: running water, crickets, ocean waves and even white noise. If your child favors a particular song they witnessed while watching television or heard on the radio, 4moms has you covered, too. It easily connects to most mp3 players, giving parents unlimited options of which tunes you can play.
Let’s talk power and size. The mamaRoo does not require batteries to power these awesome features. It runs strictly on AC power which means you will never run the risk of batteries dying right when your child is becoming comfortable. As far as safety goes, this swing meets all regulated safety standards. It features a three-point safety harness that holds your child close while they are mimicking a kangaroo or car ride! The three-position reclining seats make it easy to transition the seat position to meet your child’s needs. The mamaRoo is featured in more than 300 hospitals due to the calming effect it creates by imitating the motions and sounds a newborn is familiar with in the womb.
An infant insert is available separately if you feel your newborn needs extra support. The price point is on the higher end and may be hard for some to feel comfortable with but if you can afford it, you are sure to love this awesome model!
Graco DuetConnect LX Swing Plus Bouncer
This model developed by childcare product powerhouse, Graco, offers a unique swing that doubles as a standalone bouncer. We find that that it is very convenient to transport children into different rooms without hauling around the heavy swing chassis and motor. Plenty of options here to keep your baby entertained long enough for you to get caught up on things you may not always have time for.
We love the double-duty seat featured with this model. The transition from traditional infant swing to bouncer is a breeze. You just simply lift the seat out of the swing frame, that’s it. The supports are already built on to the bouncer so there is no unfolding of legs, which is great when the seat is occupied by a sleepy child. This combo unit is packed with many features you will love and would expect from anything Graco!
The swing comes with ten classic melodies and five nature sounds to peak your child’s interest during a relaxing swing. There is also a total of six different swing speeds and two different vibration types. All the options should make it easy to find the perfect swinging style your baby desires.
When it comes to safety, Graco doesn’t take any shortcuts. The extremely safe five-point harness comes covered with soft, attractive padding to keep baby safe, comfortable and wins some appearance points by covering the bland straps. The seat is very roomy and uses an efficient head support to give your infant plenty of room to safely play or rest. A two-position reclining seat and a great weight limit from 4-30 pounds makes this a contender for the best rated baby swing.
So, what does it take to make the DuetConnect run? It amazingly gives parents the options to use batteries or AC power. Again, we recommend finding a good set of rechargeable batteries to keep on standby incase you ever want to take this swing outdoors or to different rooms. It takes a total of five D batteries, having to replace those very often will take a hit on your wallet. We feel that the average price of about $165 makes this feature-packed swing an easy investment. With the affordable price, the Graco name (and commitment to safety) and the ability to buy a swing/bouncer combo in one purchase, we urge you to consider introducing the DuetConnect into your child’s life!
Graco Simple Sway Baby Swing
Another awesome swing designed by Graco, the Simple Sway utilizes a small frame, allowing transitioning from room to room a simple process. This model doesn’t offer as many extravagant features like the rest on this list, but it is a solid swing for a conservative parent. Whether you’re living in tight quarters or you just aren’t interested in a bulky swing to haul around, the Simple Sway offers exactly that. The compact design makes it possible for you to keep baby close in nearly any room in your home! It makes it easy to keep a watchful eye on your child while attempting to get household work done, in any room.
Graco paid full attention to making your child comfortable and engaged when building this seat. There are six different speeds and two vibration settings to choose from which makes finding your baby’s favorite pace easy. They can also enjoy the ten preloaded songs and five nature sounds to keep them enthralled in their new swing! Watch your little one stare above at the charming mobile, featuring three plush toys to keep their eyes busy.
Another great option this model offers is the ability to use an AC or DC power source. Keep the seat plugged in if you plan to stay in one room and know you can simply unplug it and rely on the batteries when you’re traveling throughout your home. Safety is a huge concern with any childcare product, and you won’t need to worry about the Graco Simple Sway being dangerous. The extremely safe five-point harness and deep plush seat will keep your baby safe and comfortable during naps or exciting activities.
You can usually find these stellar models for the low price of around $80. We feel that is a completely reasonable price, especially when you consider this swing is recommended for ages 5.5-30lbs. This impressive weight range ensures that this swing will outlast your child’s need for one. After spending a good amount of time reading what parents had to say on this model, it’s safe to say that Graco has a hit on their hands. Parents are impressed with the large, comfortable plush seat and love that it’s not a total battery consumer.
The option to run an infant swing with electricity is a great option to look for, no matter which swing you choose. There is nothing worse than attempting to try and change batteries in a swing while your infant is sleeping. By not having to constantly dispose of expired batteries avoids unnecessary damage to the environment that our children will inherit from us.
There were a few noticeable complaints parents expressed about this model. For instance, it seems that it is bit noisier than some of the more expensive models. Another concern is the lack of infant head support. Some parents needed to pad the seat with extra cushions or blankets to create security while their children were infants.
We feel that Graco has designed a perfectly suitable, affordable swing for your child’s life. Be sure to keep an eye on their fragile heads and necks while the swing is mobile. A watchful eye on an infant is necessary no matter what type of baby product you are using. We think for the low price; this option should definitely be considered!
Ingenuity SooThe ‘n Delight Portable Swing
The last but certainly not least review on our list is dedicated to a lightweight, basic swing that takes portability seriously. The Soothe ‘n Delight swing weighs in at under nine pounds but still supports children all the way up to 30lbs. Designed to foldaway for storage or traveling, this model is a great space saving baby swing. This compact design still utilizes many useful features for parents. You can choose from six delightful tunes for your child to relax to. The cool part about the music is you can control the volume as well as set a timer to automatically shut it off.
A timer is also used to control the time your child spends swinging. Choose from 15, 30 or 45 minutes of swing time before it automatically halts the swing. This swing is quiet! In fact, it uses the popular WhisperQuiet feature which means the swing operates without disturbing your child. Talk about a great resource to have when you’re trying to calm a fussy baby. We’re disappointed that there is no mobile for children to gaze up at, but there is a pivoting toy bar. It features two warm plush toys and is easily removed to give you better access when putting your baby in or out of the swing.
At an average price of around $70, we can forgive the lack of a mobile and focus on the awesome features and safety provided in this compact package. We’re serious about safety when we talk about baby products. This model meets or exceeds all required safety regulations. It comes with a great five-point harness and features grips on its sturdy feet, making slipping a non-issue on bare floors! Additionally, this model comes with a removable head support that will keep your child’s neck safe until they have good control of it on their own. Cushioned foot rests, side supports and a two-position recline system makes this baby cradle swing a great option.
Baby swing reviews showed a few minor concerns from parents, and many praises. Some older parents were not fans of how low the swing sits to the ground. It doesn’t seem that children have a problem with being so low but if you have trouble getting up from your knees, you may want to look at other options. Being unsteady with an infant in your arms can create disastrous results!
Parents loved the easy assembly, music player, consistent swinging speeds (even as the baby’s weight increases) and the convenience of portability. If you’re looking for an affordable swing to keep for traveling or even your primary infant swing, this could be the one!
We are confident you will find the best baby swing for your needs in one of these models. They all showcase exceptional safety standards, truly awesome features and efficiently serve their purpose by giving your baby a comfortable place to relax, thus giving you a chance to catch your breaths. Parents need a break too, it’s just too bad there aren’t adult-sized swings for us to sway in next to our little ones. Now that would be ultimate relaxation!
