For years, double umbrella strollers have been making things easier on multi-children families. They give parents the convenience of transporting two children and usually have many handy compartments to bring along all the necessities, like diaper bags, snacks and toys. Choosing the best double umbrella stroller for your family’s needs requires thorough research as not all strollers are meant for infants, have weight restrictions and some may be too heavy or bulkier than you wish.
This guide will be useful by highlighting some of the hottest double umbrella strollers on the market today. We have spent the time researching and critiquing several strollers and have evaluated countless double stroller reviews made by people who have actually used them – real parents with real concerns for their children’s safety. Before we get on to the reviews, let us educate you with a little more information about the double umbrella stroller.
What are Double Umbrella Strollers?
The double stroller has been in use for decades, its inception was necessary after World War 2, due to the phenomenon known as – the Baby Boom. The boom created a need for more reliable and safer baby products. Thus, the double stroller was developed.
Of course, with today’s amazing technology, twin umbrella strollers are created to meet strict safety regulations and offer parents a lightweight, convenient option to stroll two children at once. The umbrella aspect comes in because of the large canopies which cover your children’s heads to protect them from dangerous sun rays or rainy days.
They may not be packed full of the same features that a single umbrella stroller offers like, off-road wheels or fun accessories, but they are a practical solution to getting around with two young children.
Double Umbrella Strollers- Popular Styles
There are a few different variations of double umbrella strollers, three of these popular styles include:
- The Tandem Stroller – This type features two seats that are in line with one another. The back seat typically sits a little higher than the front. They are narrow and can navigate tight spaces like grocery store aisles easier.
- Side by Side Stroller – Our reviews focus on this style due to their widespread popularity and great advantages. They provide easy access to your children, easy folding systems and a lot of room for storage.
- Sit and Stand – This style can be useful for children three or five years older than their infant sibling. It is able to hold a car seat on one side and features a bench or standing platform for your older child.
Why do we Need Double Umbrella Strollers?
Parents with twins or multiple toddlers gain great advantages by utilizing a double side by side stroller. Especially for models that feature infant support safety systems, you can buy a stroller without the fear of your child outgrowing it. A quality double stroller will support children from 0+ months all the way up to 50-55 pounds.
It is sometimes recommended to invest in this type of stroller even if you only have one child but are planning on growing your family in the near future. This way, when you do have a new baby, you are already ahead of the game by having a stroller that works for both children. And your older child will get a kick out of sharing a stroller with their new younger sibling because they will be able to keep a watchful eye on them during strolls. It is a great way for your children to bond.
Benefits of Double Umbrella Strollers
The first and most obvious benefit of using a double umbrella stroller is the convenience. Most models are equipped with efficient steering systems that can make struggling to navigate a thing of the past. We love the models that feature peak-a-boo windows on top of the canopies which provide an easy view of your children while they are buckled in.
Imagine if we, as parents, could enjoy a trip to the zoo or park while being pushed around in a recliner. Yeah, that sounds great and would probably warrant more trips to the zoo! Unfortunately, we have yet to find a recliner on wheels that our children could manage to push us around in. The good news is that we can provide that luxury for them! Models of twin strollers typically feature a multi-position reclining system, some even have an independent system for each seat. One child will be able to recline flat if a nap is in order while your other child can sit upright and take on the view.
Another beneficial advantage is the convenience and ease of use of a twin umbrella stroller. Most come equipped with an easy folding and unfolding system which can be mastered with one hand after a little practice. They fold up nice and compact to save space in the car or in the home.
Are Double Umbrella Strollers Right For You?
Like every other product on the market, there are advantages and disadvantages to using a double side by side stroller. This section is not meant to dissuade you from welcoming a double stroller into your family’s life, it is however meant to show you the nuances that sometimes come with this type of stroller. In our opinion, the advantages definitely outweigh the negatives but it is best to be prepared before investing in (sometimes) costly double umbrella strollers.
The biggest disadvantage a double stroller has is its size. It is important to check the width measurements before you commit to purchasing a certain model. Make sure it will fit in your home’s doorways or other buildings you frequent. Today’s models are usually created to fit into any normal doorway but you still may have a difficult time entering certain elevators or smaller entrances.
Weight distribution is another potentially tricky part of a double stroller. If your children are of two completely different weights, the stroller will want to pull the way of the heavier child. It is crucial to go slow when first getting used to the way your stroller will react to the weight distribution.
The final downside to these strollers is the weight of the unit itself. Some models can weigh over 30 pounds which can seem intimidating for traveling or having to carry it around. However, higher end models use lightweight material to construct their chassis’. When considering if that is too much weight for you, remember that the weight is necessary in order to create a strong, safe place for your children to ride in.
The Best Double Umbrella Strollers
Zoe XL2 Deluxe Double Lightweight Twin Umbrella Stroller System
First on the list of double umbrella strollers is offered by popular manufacturer, Zoe. At an incredible lightweight (only 16 pounds!) the Deluxe XL2 will make the perfect companion for use in airports or general transportation. Some of the useful features that come with this model include three cup holders, (two for your children and one for you!) a snack tray and a reclining feature so children can sit back and enjoy the ride. Zoe even stands by their product by offering a lifetime guarantee on all wheels which means they will repair or replace any damaged wheel.
We feel this double umbrella stroller’s price point of around $250 makes it a reasonable, middle-of-the-road option. The only real complaint owners had about this model is the small wheels. It may be difficult to navigate outdoor terrains as the wheels tend to get caught on most obstacles. However, if you are planning on using this stroller on indoor floors, this spacious and lightweight double umbrella stroller should be seriously considered.
UPPAbaby G-Link Stroller
The G-Link stroller can be considered the Cadillac of double umbrella strollers on this list. You can expect to pay around $530 for this one. While that is considerably higher than other double side by side strollers on the market, the G-Link certainly comes loaded with its share of exciting features.
What makes the G-Link so much more expensive? Well, let’s begin with its high-performance wheels and unique steering system. Rather than the traditional six sets of wheels, this model utilizes only four sets of 5.75” wheels. Having a lesser number of wheels actually improves maneuverability, making this side by side stroller move with you. Lots of reviewers even brag about how they have mastered steering this unit with only one hand!
Another cool feature the G-Link offers is its independent reclining seats. This makes it easy for a restless child to kick back and relax while their co-pilot can sit up and enjoy the view. An incredible infant-support system and a weight capacity of 50 pounds, per seat, this double stroller ensures that this stroller will outlast your child’s need for one. If price is not an option, the G-Link may be considered as your family’s new double stroller.
Maclaren Twin Triumph Stroller
Another option on the higher end of the price spectrum in the double umbrella strollers market is the Twin Triumph. Typically costing around $390, it offers several prominent features that should be expected.
We’ll start with Maclaren’s dedication to creating each of their double umbrella strollers to meet safety standards of every country on the planet. The most important thing is our children’s safety, right?
The perks do not stop at safety. One of the most exciting features of this umbrella double stroller is the fact that its seats are washable. Removing and reapplying the seats is a simple task thanks to the easy removal system that is equipped.
If you have been searching for the perfect twin umbrella stroller for your family, you may have noticed that some items offer a rain guard, sold separately. The Twin Triumph comes stocked with this guard as well as oversized UV hoods, making it possible to take your children out in rain or shine.
Researching double stroller reviews didn’t turn up any negative concerns customers had towards this model. It’s safe to say that if price isn’t a big concern, you should take a hard look at this one!
Maclaren Twin Techno Stroller
Maclaren’s second option on this list is the Twin Techno. If you read the previous review then you already know about the strict safety regulations, washable seats and included rain guard that Maclaren features for their double strollers. If you haven’t read the review, take a look at number three for more information!
This model is perfect if you are expecting or have a newborn. The featured newborn safety system keeps newborns safe by using a protective head and foot barrier that keeps them from moving around during strolling. The independent multi-position reclining seats and extendable leg rests are another great feature that can make your child more comfortable during the day.
There are a couple downsides we noticed when reviewing this umbrella double stroller. Some felt that the weight of the stroller (30 pounds) was a bit too much to realistically use this as an everyday stroller. At a price point of around $390, this is another stroller that will outlast your child’s need for one.
Joovy Twin Groove Ultralight Stroller
If you’re looking for a double side by side stroller which affords plenty of storage space, the Joovy Twin Groove may be the one. There are compartments nearly everywhere! You will find two baskets under the carriage, two pouches on the back and even mesh pockets in the children’s seats. It will be easy to carry all the equipment two children require as well as giving your children a place to store their sippy cups or toys.
Huge oversized canopies are another big plus for parents. The hoods are waterproof, rated UPF 50 and feature a peak-a-boo windows. According to Consumer Reports, a high quality canopy is among one of the top five important safety features to look for in a stroller. The Joovy Twin Groove Ultralight Stroller also rated for 0+ months to 50 pounds which is a perfect option for someone who only wants to purchase one, twin umbrella stroller. When folded, this stroller is compact, lightweight and is extremely easy to carry around thanks to the build in shoulder strap.
Priced at around $300, this lightweight double umbrella stroller is perfect for parents who require a large amount of storage space for necessities. Another model which is quite difficult to find negative double stroller reviews for, the Twin Groove should be high on your list of considerations.
Chicco Echo Twin Stroller
At an average cost of $200, this twin umbrella stroller offers some really great options you would expect to see in more expensive models. There are a few downfalls that may be deal breakers for certain situations, let’s have a deeper look to see if this side by side stroller is right for you!
This is a practical option for parents who only occasionally have the need for a twin umbrella stroller. It does feature the independent reclining seats and leg supports that both parents and children love. Per double stroller reviews, this model has an exceptional turning radius, making navigation a breeze – if the wheels are working correctly. The biggest complaints consumers have is, after a little use, the wheels become wobbly which impacts the maneuverability. Some consumers report they have had luck by contacting Chicco to correct the issue. So, this may just be a case of a few bad apples that snuck through product control.
The other downside to this model is that it lacks any infant support system. It should only be used for children from six months to 40lbs. If you have a newborn, there are other double side by side strollers in this price range that do offer a support system. However, if your children are over six months and can hold their head up by themselves well, you will get a great affordable, compact, twin umbrella stroller with the Echo Twin.
Delta Children LX Side by Side Stroller
Delta has captured the major deciding factors that consumers use when deciding on a lightweight double umbrella stroller and wrapped it into one, affordable stroller. It is a beautifully designed twin stroller which typically only costs around $70.
To make such an affordable twin stroller, some would think the manufacturer would have to skimp on some of the bells and whistles that more expensive models feature. That is not the case with the LX side by side stroller. We love that this model features the independent reclining seats, shocks absorbing front wheels, storage space and even a cup holder for parents to use. Delta even offers free replacement parts in case anything fails prematurely. Vendors of this model will be able to tell you exactly which parts are eligible.
With all that being said, there are still some downsides to these features. For instance, the independent reclining system works but not as efficiently as some of the higher-end models. This twin umbrella stroller features canopies for shade, but some consumers insist they are too small to really have an impact. Most prefer to add a blanket to the canopy to provide more sun protection. The handles may also be a little low for taller parents, there are a lot of reports of hunching over while steering this one.
The bottom line is this model is a great lightweight double umbrella stroller to have available for babysitters or to loan to grandma and grandpa for a day out, but as an everyday side by side, we don’t think it’s quite there. You can also take advantage of how light weight this is by bringing it along when taking vacations and traveling with your baby.
Kolcraft Cloud Side by Side Stroller
This is another twin stroller you can find for under $100, it typically costs around $80. It is incredibly lightweight at under 24 pounds and has some cool features that parents will love.
The expandable canopies come with visor extensions which offer full coverage from sun exposure. The independent reclining seats are there which we love. Possibly the most awesome feature for this model is the climate control seats which is accessed by the independent roll-up covers that expose a mesh back. This ensures a constant air flow that keeps kids comfortable and happy.
The main complaint parents have on this stroller are the rubber footrests. It doesn’t appear that there are available leg extensions so larger children may find themselves pressing down on the footrests which lay right above the wheels. This friction causes the side by side stroller to become hard to push or completely stop, which can be a disaster to an unsuspecting parent causing one to fall forward onto the children.
All in all, this stroller is a solid, travel option for smaller children, though not infants as there is no support system. But we don’t think of it as an everyday use option. Keep this one in your car for use on trips!
Dreamon Me Double Twin Stroller
This umbrella double stroller weighs in at only 24 pounds and features an incredible amount of storage space. An average cost of only $85 makes this an affordable, quality option for your family.
We love, love, love the amount of storage this model offers. There is adamant space for anything we need for a day at the park or zoo, making long day trips an ease. Some other great features are the reclining seats, five-point safety harnesses and even an attachable safety bar. The adjustable canopies are another plus, they provide plenty of shade on sunny days.
As with most twin double strollers, there are a few issues consumers are reporting. One big issue is how wide the Dreamon Me stroller is, people have issues getting it through some doorways. This can be a huge disadvantage if you are forced to remove your children to fold the stroller each time you enter a door.
We feel that this can be a great twin side by side stroller for use in wide-open areas like outdoor venues. This is another one that should probably be avoided if you’re looking for an everyday stroller. This model would also make a great companion on your family vacations.
To conclude this guide, we want to wish you luck on finding the best double umbrella stroller for your family! Remember to always pay attention to the weight restrictions and check to see if there is an infant support system if you are shopping for a newborn. Today’s double stroller market is full of exciting, exceptional models that will no doubt add a new level of convenience to you and your children. Have fun in your search and we hope this guide was helpful in opening your eyes to the many different possibilities.
