The wheels in a parent’s head begin turning immediately after learning they’re expecting! Names, gender and bedroom decorations are common thoughts that run through our minds. Another major concern is acquiring the newborn essentials that add convenience and safety for our children’s upcoming debut! Our goal here is to shine a light on helpful baby products that should be in the hands of every parent embarking down the path of parenthood.
This article isn’t only for first-time parents! We are also setting out to inform those experiencing another go around in the joyous occasion of raising a newborn. Perhaps you waited a few years between children and are unaware of the innovations that manufacturers have created since the last time you were expecting.
Grab Your Shower Registry!
We did the hard work and compiled the most crucial products that make your job easier. Make sure your baby-shower registry is handy as you will be tempted to add several items you may not have thought you needed.
For the Health of Your Baby
For first time parents, even a small sneeze emitted from a newborn will raise concern that a little one is becoming ill. While your child’s health is not something to be taking lightly, it can be easy to find yourself overly concerned. That’s why these products are essential in maintaining and monitoring your baby’s wellbeing!
Fevers and babies are a dangerous combination. Since babies (especially those born premature) have a temperature regulation system that is still developing, a fever doesn’t always arise due to an infection or illness. Sometimes there are more serious issues that must be checked by a doctor. There are several different thermometers available to parents. Here are the differences as well as the pros and cons.
- Rectal – Checking a temperature rectally reveals the most accurate readings of any thermometer on the market. The downsides are that it may cause discomfort to your child, making it more difficult to keep a thermometer in place and possibly creating a tantrum.
- Forehead – Known as Temporal Artery thermometers, readings are discovered by waving it across your baby’s forehead. While readings are incredibly accurate in older children, it is recommended to double check temperatures with a rectal thermometer in children under 3 months old. You may want to wait and purchase this expensive option once your child gets passed the newborn stage.
- Armpit – The old-fashioned way of taking temperatures. Experts state that armpit readings may be impacted by the conditions of a room, oftentimes leading to inaccurate results.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the desired and most accurate way to get results in children under three years old is by using a rectal thermometer. If temperature readings of a baby younger than three months old exceed 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, contact your doctor immediately.
One of the easiest ways to help your baby stay healthy is by ensuring they are clean! Allowing your newborn to be exposed to dangerous bacteria is just asking for trouble. The experts at healthychildren.org suggest sponge bathing baby three times a week once the stump of an umbilical cord falls off. Once baby begins crawling and rolling around on the floor, bathing becomes more crucial!
Obtaining an infant tub at the beginning will make bath time a breeze for you and help support your baby rather than risking a slip and slide by sitting in the sink. Many tubs adjust to the needs of both infants and older children who aren’t quite ready for the big tub.
You can certainly get by with a dual-purpose plastic tub which features positions for infants and growing children. However, higher-end models have some really cool features like reclining positions and even a digital readout of the water’s temperature.
Must Haves for the Medicine Cabinet
Having an arsenal of baby healthcare products is crucial for parents. Here are some important products that should be featured in every expecting parent’s cabinet.
- Diaper Rash Cream
- Infant Tylenol
- Nasal Bulb
- Antibacterial Ointment
- Petroleum Jelly
- Rubbing Alcohol for Sterilizing Tools
If you’re reading this to get some ideas on what to give a loved one who is expecting – consider compiling these products and displaying them in a beautiful care package. Diaper cakes are a great registry gift, but these helpful products will be truly appreciated and well used!
Products that Benefit Safety
This section showcases products that are necessary for the well-being of your growing child.
A quality car seat is the biggest defender a child can have when enjoying time in the car. Making sure it is properly installed, based on its manufacturer’s instructions will ensure a safe housing in the case of an accident. Some higher-end models can get quite expensive but it’s important to put a strong seat at the top of your list and budget. A great option for a one-time purchase would be going with a convertible car seat. You can find affordable options that grow with your child until they no longer need the extra support.
Never buy USED when purchasing a car seat. They have expiration dates and without knowing the exact history of these products means you can be purchasing something in compromised condition.
Utilizing a baby monitor is a great way to keep an eye on your baby from different rooms. Years ago, parents relied on sound to determine if something was amiss in the nursery. Today’s monitors are incredible, some even displaying video images in high definition. With a high-end monitor system, you won’t miss a second of what your baby is doing. Click here to see our review on the innovative iBaby Monitor.
Video monitors are also a great tool to have when your baby becomes a toddler and begins their shift into independence. Monitoring their behavior without standing over their shoulders keeps them safe and can boost their confidence. Don’t be afraid to interfere when they attempt to scale their bedroom furniture like it’s Mt. Everest – it’s going to happen!
For parents who have multiple children, consider buying a system that features multiple-room monitoring. These give you the ability to check up on children in different rooms, sometimes right from your smartphone.
In the Nursery
Decorating your baby’s bedroom is one of the most exciting activities for an expecting parent. It’s also the time to fill it with all the necessary furniture your baby will require once they start growing.
At first, you may decide that the best place for your newborn to sleep is in a bassinet next to your bed. Once the time comes to make the shift into their nursery, a quality crib is crucial. Adjustable options are available which allow the mattress to be lowered as your little one grows. This is a huge safety advantage as adventurous children will likely attempt an escape over the rails.
While it’s easy to change a baby anywhere, you may consider investing in a crib featuring a changing table. This secure structure holds all the necessary pieces that go with diaper changing. While it is not completely necessary, it does provide extreme convenience which is a major plus.
The AAP suggests that swaddling can be an effective technique to help calm infants and promote sleep. It is believed that this this gives a baby the sense of familiarity of their mother’s womb, which makes them peaceful and content. There are a ton of swaddle blankets available to hold your baby close.
The Fun Stuff!
With the amount of stress that comes with planning for a baby, it’s easy to forget about the pure joy that is coming your way. Baby products have benefited from modern technology and manufacturers have built some truly amazing products. Below are some of our favorite types!
If you already have children, you have probably quietly begged to have an extra hand to clean a mess or check the important email you have been waiting on. With a baby carrier, it’s now possible to keep your baby close to your chest and be able to function efficiently.
These cocoons snugly hold your infant, giving them a sense of comfort while you have your hands available for the many tasks that come with everyday responsibilities.
Today’s night lights are far more advanced than the ones you probably had as a child. They do much more than just give kiddos a sense of security by providing a small light in their room. Certain models promote bedtime by displaying relaxing light shows on ceilings and even announcing soothing sounds. Your child will love the sound of their favorite nursery rhyme when resting their heads.
An infant swing gives your baby a place to relax while you focus on everyday tasks. Most models feature different vibration levels, swing patterns and even a toy bar to keep your child entertained. Previously, we did a review on an awesome product – the mamaRoo by 4moms. It is a next-level version of an infant swing and is a favorite of parents everywhere. Babies love bouncing! By introducing a bouncer into your child’s life, you’re giving them time to relax and get to know their surroundings. These chairs are typically light and give you the benefit of portability. While your baby is bouncing away, you’ll have the chance to recuperate from a long day of being a parent. Bouncers often include different vibration modes and as your baby grows and gets the hang of their feet, they can feel a sense of independence by making the chair move on their own!
Once your child has passed the breastfeeding or formula stage of their life, they’ll need a sturdy structure to enjoy their meals in. A good high chair makes it easy to securely hold your child during feeding sessions. You have many options when it comes to choosing the perfect high chair. First consider your available space, and then consider if you would prefer portability or would rather have a more permanent fixture in your kitchen.
These are a few of the most important items to round up during your pregnancy and most will even stay in your child’s life for many wonderful months or even years to come. Make sure you are following manufacturer recommendations and only use products for their intended purposes.
Whether this is your first child or you are adding to your family, we want to congratulate you!
